Types of Welding Techniques

There are a variety of welding techniques, however, they are used for different purposes and hence, it is important to look at the different types of welding machines. Some of the common welding techniques are discussed below:

Stick welding/SMAW

Stick welding is one of the most common welding techniques used. It involves the use of an electric arc between the base metal and the rod electrode.

When the electrode is fed into the weld pool, it is melted and adhered to the base metal by the help of the arc. Hence, the electrode is called the filler. The filler is melted by the arc and is transferred to the base metal.

This technique is also known as Submerged Arc Welding (SAW). The electrode is usually a flux-coated steel wire or solid wire.

In this technique, the electrode wire is directly fed into the weld pool. The filler wire used in this technique is consumable material. The weld pool is created by using an electric arc with the help of a power source.

MIG welding/GMAW

Metal Inert Gas (MIG) or Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) is similar to Stick Welding in many ways.

They are both used for welding all types of metals and are ideal for thin metal sheets and plates. As the name suggests, MIG welding uses gas in combination with a wire electrode to weld metal pieces together.

Here, there is no direct contact between the electrode and the weld pool; instead, the electrode passes through a shielding gas which protects the electrode from oxidation or contamination by the base metal.

The shielding gas not only protects the electrode but also aids in controlling the heat input and as a result, improves arc stability and weld quality. This shielding gas can be pure argon, helium or a combination of both.

The gas flow rate is controlled through a gas regulator. MIG welding is also known as Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). MIG welding can be used to weld both ferrous and non-ferrous metals; however, it is mainly used to weld thin sheets and plates of metals.

Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)

This technique or welding process is also known as Gas Shielded Arc Welding (GSW).

It is similar to MIG welding in terms of the working mechanism. In this technique, a wire feeder supplies a coated flux-cored wire to the weld pool instead of using an electrode wire. The flux-coated wire is fed into the weld pool by means of a wire feeder.

Shielding gas is also supplied to protect the flux-cored wire from oxidation. FCAW can be used for welding both ferrous and non-ferrous metals and is suitable for thicker sheet metals and structural applications.

Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) or Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)

Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) or Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) is used for welding thin metals and when other welding processes cannot be used. In this process, a non-consumable tungsten electrode is used to transfer heat energy directly into the weld pool from the tungsten electrode.

A non-consumable tungsten electrode means that it doesn’t get consumed during the arc strike process; instead, it has to be ground after each use for reuse.

Buying Guide-Best Welding Machines In India

There are many factors that you have to look into before buying a welding machine, some of which are listed below:

Quality of the weld:

Quality of a weld can be determined by a number of factors, one of which is its appearance. If you look at a professional weld, you will notice that it looks like a ‘doughnut’ with a lot of concentric circles surrounding it.

However, there can be a few variations as well; sometimes, a puddle may be flat or convex; however, it will always have concentric circles surrounding it.

One of the main reasons behind this phenomenon is that when a welder uses his/her skills properly, they can control and manipulate heat energy properly and can make it flow towards one direction only.

This results in quality welds. Hence, a good welder can produce good quality welds with consistency every time he/she uses his/her skills properly. Hence, if you want good quality welds, you should buy good quality tools for your welder.

Welding conditions:

The welding conditions in which you want your welder to perform can help you determine which tool you should buy for your welder.

For example: If your welder will only be used in your garage for simple tasks like fixing your car or making small structures then you can buy cheap tools for your welder; however, if your welder will be used in workshops with more complex tasks involved, then you should buy more expensive tools for your welder so that you get more value out of your money.

Metal thickness:

The thickness of metal that you want to weld also plays an important role in determining which tool you have to buy for your welder.

If you plan on welding thin sheets or plates then you can buy cheap tools for your welder; however, if you want to weld thick sheets or plates then you will have to buy expensive tools for your welder so that it performs well even on thick materials.

Metal types:

The type of metal that you want to weld also helps you determine which type of tool you should buy for your welder.

If you are planning on welding aluminum, then you will have to buy a good machine for your welder so that it can perform well; however, if you are planning on welding stainless steel, then you can buy cheap tools for your welder.

Basic or complex machine:

Another factor that you have to consider before buying a welder is whether you want a basic machine or a complex one.

If you are planning on making simple tasks like fixing your car or making simple structures, then a basic machine will be good enough; however, if you want to make more complex tasks or professional welds then you should buy a complex machine for your welder.

AC/DC power source:

Another factor that you have to consider before buying a welder is whether it has an AC or a DC power source; however, generally, MIG welders use DC power sources while TIG welders use AC power sources.

Portable welding:

Another factor that you have to consider before buying a welder is whether it is portable or not.

Portable welders are more convenient than the ones that are fixed on the floor as they can be carried around from one place to another; however, they are more expensive than the ones that are fixed on the floor. If you are not looking for a portable welder, then you can save some money by buying the ones that are fixed on the floor.

Welding power source duty cycle:

Another factor that you have to consider before buying a welder is its duty cycle. The duty cycle of a welder is the maximum amount of time that it can be operated continuously before getting overheated.

If you buy a machine with a high duty cycle, then you will be able to perform many tasks continuously without worrying about the overheating of the machine; however, if you buy a machine with a low duty cycle, then you will have to stop the machine and let it cool down after performing a certain amount of tasks continuously.

Price:

The last factor that you have to consider before buying a welder is its price.

It is true that the more expensive a machine is the better its quality is; however, it is not always the case as some manufacturers produce good quality machines at affordable prices so that customers can get more value out of their money.
